Acer's S3 Ultrabook: Thin Like the MacBook Air

S3

Berlin's IFA Consumer Electronics Show has become the official launch party of Ultrabooks, an Intel-conceptualized category that plans to put more Apple Macbook Air look-alikes into the hands of consumers.

Today, Acer launched its S3 Ultrabook, following Toshiba's and Lenovo's entries into this category. Acer's version measures a mere 0.51 inches, which is thinner than the Macbook Air 13-inch at its thickest point (0.67 inches), and weighs a scant 3.1 pounds.

The S3's thin magnesium shell is no surprise, as metal appears to be the material of choice for crafting Ultrabooks. It features a 13.3-inch widescreen and 1,366-by-768 resolution. Its use of a Chiclet-style keyboard and glass clicking touchpad are consistent with those of the Toshiba Portege Z830 and Lenovo Ideapad U300s.

In terms of features, the bulk of the S3's ports are located in the back, where you'll find HDMI and two USBs. A memory card reader can be found on the right side, while the left side boasts a headphone jack. Like its Ultrabook brethren, the S3 lacks Ethernet, VGA, and of course, a built-in optical drive. Intel requires in its guidelines that Ultrabooks use Solid State Drives in order to take advantage of its Rapid Start Technology, which facilitates instant boot and resume times. Acer, apparently, is also offering options for spinning hard drives, which would lower the price of the laptop but also forfeit its instant-on capabilities.

IFA 2011

The rest of the S3's specs are in line with the Toshiba Z830 and Lenovo U300s: It uses a low volt Intel Core i5-2467M processor, 4GB of memory, and 64GB SSD (with a 128GB option). It features a non-removable battery (Acer didn't list its capacity). But if the Z830 and U300s are any indication, the battery is most likely a Lithium Polymer 6-cell and last in the range of eight hours. Yes, long battery life is also part of Intel's Ultrabook guideline.

The Acer S3 will sell for around $1,179 when it ships later this year. By comparison, Asus and Toshiba are planning to sell their Ultrabooks for less than $1,000, while Lenovo listed its U300s for $1,199.

Acer liquidmini Ferrari Edition is one race loving droid

Acer and Scuderia Ferrari have been successful partners for quite some time now, with Ferrari branded, Acer laptops being the most prominent product to come from the relationship. The latest addition to the Acer Ferrari product line is significantly more pocket friendly than any of its predecessors - it is an Android smartphone.

The Acer liquidimini Ferrari Edition droid is aimed at all the Ferrari fans out there, who cannot afford the Vertu made handsets, which are also endorsed by the Italian car maker. The smartphone is essentially a Ferrari themed, Acer Liquid mini E310.

The droid is powered by a 600MHz CPU, and comes with 512MB of RAM on board. The device has 512MB of built-in memory, which is expandable through a microSD card (8GB is included in the retail package). The screen is 3.2" LCD unit with HVGA resolution and multitouch support. A 5MP camera will help you capture your racing moments with video recording available at the lowly 480p. All this entry level Android goodness will come in a Ferrari red body, which weighs only 105 grams. Another important addition to the droid's retail package will be the exclusive Bluetooth headset.

The Acer liquidmini Ferrari Edition will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread with UI, which has been Ferrari themed as well. Logically, the pre-installed sounds of the droid will include Ferrari engine sounds too.

There is currently no information on price or availability of the droid, but don't expect the former to completely match its internals. We can't help but be a bit puzzled by the hardware selection for a Ferrari branded Acer device. Its budget oriented background appears to be somehow out of sync with the philosophy of the Italian maker of exotic cars, don't you think?

Acer Iconia Tab is getting Android 3.2 update Over The Air

The Acer Iconia Tab A500/A501 was quick to jump on the Android 3.1 update and it has made another jump – to Android 3.2. The update is available Over-The-Air, so if you have one of these you should hit the Check for updates option in the About menu.

gsmarena 001 Acer Iconia Tab is getting Android 3.2 update Over The Air

Aside from a variety of optimization across the whole OS, Android 3.2 brings a couple of other important changes, so this update is quite welcome. The other two changes are app scaling so that apps designed for phones can be stretched to fit tablets and syncing media from the SD card.

Anyway, check for updates for your Acer Iconia Tab A500/A501 and don’t forget to drop us a line. It’s not clear which regions can enjoy the update, so mention that in your comment below – we’d love to hear from you and other readers will find the info useful. Acer Aspire 3951 images and specs leak, an ultrabook that takes aim at the MacBook Air

gsmarena 001 Acer Aspire 3951 images and specs leak, an ultrabook that takes aim at the MacBook Air

I’d love to see some official specs on the Aspire 3951 but for now we’ll just have to look at the rumors – a second-generation Intel Core processor (that’s Sandy Bridge) and optional SSD sure sound good. If the 160GB SSD is too small for you, there are 250GB and 500GB HDD options too.

The Acer Aspire 3951 also reportedly features goodies like an HDMI port and Bluetooth 4.0 (that enables low-power Bluetooth accessories). The battery of the Acer ultrabook should last for 6 hours on one charge, which is pretty impressive too.

There’s no info on graphics but the integrated Intel graphics are probably what we’ll get. Fitting dedicated GPUs in super thin laptops usually drives the price up quite a bit, not to mention that it often causes heat issues.

gsmarena 002 Acer Aspire 3951 images and specs leak, an ultrabook that takes aim at the MacBook Air

The Acer Aspire 3951 will reportedly ship in November for $770-$960 (€540-€670), depending on configuration. That should give the new 13″ MacBook Airs a run for its money – they start at $1,300 (with a 128GB SSD).

Acer doesn’t quite have Apple’s reputation, but that price gap should make everyone on the lookout for a similar device at least consider it. Are you interested?
