LG Optimus Slider to hit Virgin Mobile USA

If you’re one of the minority who subscribes to Virgin Mobile USA, then you might be interested to know that the carrier has yet another QWERTY keyboard smartphone that runs on the Android operating system coming your way – in the form of the LG Optimus Slider. Yes sir, this smartphone with a slide-out keyboard would make it perfect for those who absolutely loathe virtual keyboards even until today, simply because it is far easier to type with a physical keyboard, and the kind of tactile feedback that you receive makes it all the more satisfying.

It doesn’t matter if you are a heavy social networker or just have tons of emails and text messages to sift through each day – the LG Optimus Slider will make short work of any messages that you intend to write out. It will arrive Stateside from October 17th onwards for $199.99 a pop at online sources, while those who prefer brick-and-mortar stores can look forward to the handset in Best Buy and RadioShack on October 31st (hello, Halloween!), with Sprint and Target stores to follow in November.

Just in case the LG Optimus Slider looks extremely familiar to you, this is actually the second generation of the popular LG Optimus V that rolled out earlier this year, and has remained one of the most popular smartphones on Virgin Mobile USA. What are some of the hardware specifications that the LG Optimus Slider will bring to the table? Well, we are looking at a decent 3.2″ touchscreen display (which might seem to be a bit too small these days), the slide out QWERTY keyboard, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 3.2-megapixel camera, a microSD memory card slot, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity.

Pre-installed apps include Virgin Mobile Live 2.0 for your social networking needs, while you can also access the Virgin Mobile branded music stream that is hosted by DJ Abbey Braden. Anyone interested so far?

LG SU880 Optimus EX with Tegra 2 SoC and NOVA screen unveiled

LG has just officially unveiled its Korea-bound Optimus EX smartphone. We first met with the Android-running handset last week, when we got an official photo and detailed specs ahead of teh launch, so there are no surprises now.

The LG Optimus EX runs on Gingerbread and relies on a Tegra 2 chipset with a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU and 1GB of RAM to do the math. The 4" WVGA screen on top will be of the NOVA variety, which promises one of the highest brightness levels on the market.

At the back there's a 5 megapixel camera that does 1080p video recording, while on the front is a VGA camera for video-chatting. The included storage is relatively modest at 8GB, but the microSD slot lets you expand that as much as you like.

The LG SU880 Optimus EX will be available to South Korea's SK Telecom customers, but the release timeframe or pricing haven't been mentioned. LG also hasn't mentioned if they plan on bringing a version of the smartphone to Europe or US.

LG Univa E510 droid surfaces in a quick hands-on session

LG hasn’t officially introduced the LG Univa E510, which is supposedly the Optimus Two, but the smartphone has surfaced yet again, starring in a quick hands-on. The hands-on confirms most of the specs of the Optimus One successor, including that it runs Android Gingerbread (v2.3.4).

It's powered by a Qualcomm chipset with an 800MHz CPU, 512MB RAM and Adreno 200 graphics. Unfortunately the CPU uses ARMv6 architecture (just like the Optimus One processor), which means no support for the Flash plugin, the Android version of Firefox and other apps that require ARMv7 processors.

LG Univa hands-on photos

The screen of the Univa E510 measures 3.5" and has HVGA resolution. That makes it bigger than both the Optimus One and the Optimus Net screens. The camera is a 5MP snapper, again better than what the One and the Net have to offer. Screen and camera aside, the Univa and Optimus Net look pretty close though.

The LG Univa E510 is reportedly well-built, a bit more compact than an HTC Desire S, but on the heavy side. On the upside, the 1500mAh battery does quite well.

You can check out the hands-on over at Mobili.no (note that it's in Norwegian). The LG Univa E510 will launch in Q4 according to a leaked roadmap.

Korea-bound LG Optimus Note Tegra 2 QWERTY slider leaks

Just days after the Galaxy Note announcement, we meet another Note - only this time it's a member of the LG Optimus lineup. It's a QWERTY slider with 4-inch WVGA NOVA display and based on the Tergra 2 chipset with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor.

The rest of the specs we know so far include are 5 megapixel camera with HD video recording, a VGA front camera, 8GB internal storage, an HDMI port and Wi-Fi Direct support. The LG Optimus Note is reportedly, just 12.3mm thick, and is running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

LG Optimus Note official and live pictures

The Optimus Note that we see in these pictures is obviously headed to Korea, but who knows how things will turn up in the end. It might become available under a different name, since Samsung managed to announce its Note device first.

LG Thrill 4G (a.k.a. Optimus 3D) to launch September 4th on AT&T

AT&T took the modern approach to bragging by posting on Twitter that the LG Thrill 4G will be available on September 4th. That's their version of the LG Optimus 3D and it packs the same 4.3" glasses-free 3D display and dual 5MP camera.

Ur whole world in 3D, on 9/4 w/LG #Thrill4G with glasses-free 3D. Tell us how your world is going to come alive. http://t.co/YVWvWNGMon Aug 29 20:58:56 via Social Publisher

The LG Thrill 4G (just to make things clear, "4G" means HSPA+ here) has been teased by AT&T for ages (well, since March) and it was even up for pre-order on RadioShack at one point.

The prices we heard then from Radio Shack were $79.99 on a two-year contract (after buying a $50 gift card to be able to pre-order) or $550 off contract. Now we're hearing $100 on contract. AT&T is still keeping us guessing, we'll know the actual price this Sunday when the Thrill 4G finally launches.

This gives you a few days to decide if you want one or not - check out our review of the unbranded Optimus 3D and keep in mind that the phone will soon be able to convert almost any 3D game into a stereoscopic 3D game. And National Geographic photographers have been using it to shoot photos and videos (we should see those at IFA around the time the LG Thrill 4G launches).

Gingerbread-running LG Univa E510 leaks, is it the Optimus Two?

Live photos of an unannounced Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread-running LG Univa E510 just surfaced on the web. It's a midrange device with a 3.5" screen that probably comes to succeed the highly successful LG Optimus One.

Our first meeting with the LG Univa E510 was last month, when it appeared on that leaked LG roadmap. The smartphone, which will probably enter the retail network under the name of LG Optimus Two, is the first of the devices on that list that we actually see in flesh, but the rest should appear soon, if they are too meet their release deadlines.

This second leak of the 11.9mm LG Univa confirms the 800MHz processor ticking inside the device and the HVGA resolution of its screen. The compact droid will also come with a 5 megapixel camera as well as GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n with DLNA support and 3G.

The LG Univa is scheduled for a launch in Q4 of this year so an official announce should come soon. Here's hoping that LG will the new Prada smartphone soon too!

LG Optimus One Gingerbread update starts rolling out

Although way off the original schedule, it seems the Gingerbread update to the LG Optimus One has finally started rolling out. We are hearing reports from numerous countries that the Optimus One is now being updated to Android 2.3.3. The update needs to be downloaded through LG’s desktop client though, as that’s just how LG rolls.

We are also hearing that the other recently launched LG phones, such as the Optimus 2x and Optimus 3D will be getting the Gingerbread update soon. So be sure to keep checking and let us know how it goes.

[IFA 2011] LG Optimus 3D will soon convert mobile games into 3D, gets picked by the National Geographic team

LG is bringing the big 3D guns to IFA this year – they will be showcasing a couple of things, both centered at the Optimus 3D. The first is a technology that will convert any 3D game into a stereoscopic 3D game.

gsmarena 001 [IFA 2011] LG Optimus 3D will soon convert mobile games into 3D, gets picked by the National Geographic team

LG has also given an Optimus 3D to six National Geographic photographers, who will produce the first 3D images and video for National Geographic.

The 3D Game Converter will be ready for action at IFA – it takes an OpenGL-based 3D game (like an FPS shooter for example) and turns it into stereoscopic 3D (like you see in 3D movies).

It will work for any game – the converter will come with settings for some games (50 games by October, another 50 by the end of the year) and you can adjust the settings manually for those not on the list.

The converter will work only on the Optimus 3D (LG’s only gadget with a 3D display so far), only in landscape and only for OpenGL games – since OpenGL is the 3D platform of choice on Android and most games are played in landscape, I don’t think that should be much of a problem.

source:http://blog.gsmarena.com/lg-at-ifa-optimus-3d-converts-games-into-stereoscopic-3d-shoots-3d-photos-and-videos-for-national-geographic/

The conversion uses the 3D data already present in the game (used for rendering the scene), so it should look like the game was designed for stereoscopic 3D and not the flat cut-outs we see in post-converted 3D movies.

The 3D Game Converter will be released along with a maintenance release in October, with the exact date depending on carriers.

gsmarena 002 [IFA 2011] LG Optimus 3D will soon convert mobile games into 3D, gets picked by the National Geographic team

The LG Optimus 3D has also been going to interesting places in the hands on four National Geographic photographers and two videographers (you can see the list here). They’ve been putting the 3D-shooting prowess of the Optimus 3D (both stills and videos) and their work will be featured at IFA.

LG’s press release doesn’t say how the team at National Geographic plans to make those photos and videos available afterwards – through a mobile app, maybe?

Anyway, IFA starts September 2nd and ends September 7th – LG’s booth will be the place to visit if you’re into the whole stereoscopic 3D thing.

LG Optimus 3D now available in white from Phones 4u in the UK

Nearly everyone at the time was aware of the arduous birth of the white iPhone 4 but making such top products whiter than white is anything but exclusive to the likes of Apple. Other top-end smartphones which have more recently been able to parade around in a white lick of paint include the Android powered Samsung Galaxy S II and the LG Optimus White (aka, the Optimus Black).

It now appears to be the LG Optimus 3D's turn to don the white however, as shots have cropped up from the back rooms of UK mobile retailer Phones 4u alongside its darker, more traditional twin.

Both white and black Optimus 3D models are available right now from the Phone 4u website, however the white is only available on Orange, O2 and Vodafone, whereas the classic black 3D is also available on T-Mobile as well. This might change down the line but as it stands, there's no sign of the white stuff heading for the magenta 'T'.

The cheapest plan comes courtesy of Vodafone with a 2 year contract at £20.50 a month, excluding the £79 for the handset itself which isn't too bad for that phone's 3D goodness.

Incase you hadn't heard, the LG Optimus 3D is a 4.3" Android smartphone running Froyo 2.2 (upgradeable to Gingerbread 2.3 down the line). The display is a 3D touch screen that uses parallax barrier technology to offer glasses-free 3D to the masses. Specs also include a 1GHz dual-core ARM cortex A9 processor and to make the most of that unusual display, there's a set of dual 5MP cameras for taking 3D stills and film (at 3MP and only in 720p for 3D modes).

Check out the full review of the LG Optimus 3D to really get to grips with what it's all about here.

LG’s yet to be launched 4.5″ AH-IPS mobile display scores an award by outclassing Samsung Galaxy SII’s Super AMOLED unit

It is well known to everyone these days, that the Samsung made Super AMOLED screens are the standard to beat in the mobile industry. LG surely thinks so. The Korean company’s yet to be launched AH-IPS display for mobile devices, just received the prestigious Quality & Performance Mark from Intertek – a global testing and certification company. What’s particularly important about this award for LG, is that it has been achieved by comparing its display with no other but Samsung Galaxy SII’s Super AMOLED screen.

gsmarena 001 LGs yet to be launched 4.5 AH IPS mobile display scores an award by outclassing Samsung Galaxy SIIs Super AMOLED unit

Now on with some numbers. The award winning AH-IPS display from LG measures 4.5″ and has HD(720×1280 pixels) resolution with 329ppi. Samsung Galaxu SII’s Super AMOLED unit on the other hand, measures 4.3″ and settles for WVGA (480×800 pixels) resolution and 217ppi.

All in all, the LG unit trumped the Samsung made screen in color accuracy and power consumption by a significant margin. In the color accuracy test, the LG display scored a rating of 0.012, compared with 0.037 for the Super AMOLED from Samsung. Here, it is important to note that the lower the color accuracy value is, the smaller the gap between original and reproduced color.

In the power consumption test, the AH-IPS screen was found to consume a constant level of power, measured at 624mW, compared to 1130mW of the Super AMOLED, while boasting 600 nits of brightness. In plain words, the LG screen is significantly more power efficient than its competitor.

While this is all great news for LG, I can’t help but wonder if this can be considered a victory for the company against Samsung in the battle of mobile screens. LG’s AH-IPS screen is yet to be seen in a mobile device, while Samsung’s Super AMOLED screen has been out on the market for well over six months. Samsung is also about to release its own AMOLED screen with HD resolution in the nearest future and, I dare to think, it will be more appropriate for it to be compared with the excellent LG unit. The results might just end up being a bit different then, don’t you think?

LG A530 notebook joins the 3D fray

LG’s latest notebook would be something different the moment you lay your eyes on it, as the A530 will sport stereoscopic 3D support in addition to a 3D dual webcam that is located right above the 15.6″ Full HD 3D LCD display, allowing you to basically shoot your very own 3D videos and photos. There is a bunch of solid hardware crammed inside the luxurious metalliclook chassis, making sure that everyone knows you forked out top dollar (or Euro) for this one.

It does seem as though the stereoscopic 3D bandwagon is catching on in many ways, ranging from tablets to smartphones, and notebooks are not exempted either. Guess LG decided to bring over their expertise in 3D viewing from the living room to the world of notebooks, and have done so with the Xnote A530.

While the majority of the other 3D notebooks deliver just 3D viewing, the LG A530 will be different from the rest since it offers a “full, superior 3D experience, with the ability to see, shoot and share via the 3D dual webcam”. I must say that the inclusion of the 3D dual webcam clearly sets the A530 apart from the rest, since it allows you to conjure up dazzling 3D content in a jiffy. Apart from that, the LG A530 also offers an integrated 3D experience as you will be able to playback all the generated 3D content on the rest of LG’s ecosystem that comprises of 3D-enabled smartphones, TVs and monitors.

Apart from that, you can bring the 3D love to the masses as the LG A530 allows you to share 3D content with the rest of the world simply by uploading it over to YouTube. Not only that, LG has also thrown in its very own 3D Space Software, which is LG’s new integrated user interface that will enable you to access 3D video, photos, games and movies in a jiffy for an even wider range of 3D options.

Last but not least, there is LG’s proprietary Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology that offers brighter 3D images which are totally free of flicker, allowing users to watch 3D content on the LG A530 even for extended periods without having to harm their eyes with feeling of strain or dizziness. No idea on pricing, but LG will deliver the premium LG A530 in Europe first, followed by the Middle East and Africa.

LG Envoy (U.S. Cellular)

LG Envoy (U.S. Cellular)

Need a cheap cell phone for voice calls? The LG Envoy is a decent, inexpensive choice for U.S. Cellular customers, with its tough-feeling plastic and familiar flip design. That said, you're giving up an awful lot to hit that $9.99 price; essentially, this is a phone from 2005, not 2011. A few extra bucks up front will get you a much better handset.

Design, Call Quality, and Apps
The Envoy measures 3.8 by 1.9 by 0.7 inches (HWD) and weighs a rather light 3.4 ounces, given its largish size when flipped open. The 1-inch external display sports 96-by-64-pixel resolution, but it's only grayscale; at least it's moderately informative about phone and call status. Inside, the 2.2-inch, 176-by-220-pixel LCD is a typical low-end part, and fine in this application. The oversized keypad is a gem. Between the large keys, big five-way control pad, and well-separated function keys, using this phone one-handed is a cinch.

The Envoy is a dual-band 1xRTT (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi. Voice quality was about as good as you could hope; callers sounded crisp, clear, and bright in the earpiece, with just the slightest touch of static. Transmissions were also clear through the microphone, and reception was solid. Calls sounded good through an Aliph Jawbone Era ($129, 4 stars) Bluetooth headset. Voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth without training, but I couldn't get it to recognize the word "Yes" to confirm it heard the right phone number. Pressing OK worked, but that's not ideal. The speakerphone had about average gain, but distorted at nearly all of the available volume settings. Battery life was good at 6 hours and 32 minutes of talk time.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
The main menu consists of 12 icons arranged in a grid pattern, but there's not a whole lot happening on the app side. The dated Myriad 6.2 browser is only good for WAP pages, and only if you're patient enough to let them load over the 2G data radio. There's a basic calendar, a toolbox of little apps like a world clock and tip calculator, a demo version of Namco's Pac-Man, and EasyEdge, U.S. Cellular's little ringtone, wallpaper, and app store.

This isn't a phone for multimedia fans. There's only 24MB of free internal memory. There's no music player, video player, or camcorder. The non-standard 2.5mm headphone jack only works with mono, hands-free earbuds. The VGA camera may as well not be there; I can't believe I'm still seeing these on brand new phones as we approach 2012. Any photos you take only fill up about a quarter of the average laptop screen. Getting them off the phone and to the laptop in the first place is almost impossible; your only choices are picture messaging, Bluetooth, or online albums, and the latter choice requires that you set up an account with U.S. Cellular's service.

It's tough to be enthusiastic about this phone, even with its good call quality and battery life, just because everything about it reeks of ancient. The LG Envoy is basically interchangeable with the Samsung Chrono ($0.01, 2.5 stars) and the Samsung Stride (Free, 3 stars). All three are 2G flip phones with low-res screens, good call quality, and virtually no other features of note. Since we're talking about a two-year commitment that approaches $1,000, it's worth it to consider spending a little more up front. The LG Wine II ($39, 3.5 stars) is our current Editors' Choice, and well worth the extra $30, thanks to its good looks, quality music player, much faster 3G data speeds, and larger, sharper color LCD. Frequent texters will want something with a QWERTY keyboard; the Motorola Grasp (Free, 3.5 stars) and the Samsung Messager Touch SCH-R630 ($29.99, 3 stars) have roomy hardware keys, and the latter sports a touch screen for those who prefer them.

A Jil Sander branded, LG made, Windows Mango phone leaks out

LG surely has a knack for fashion designers, folks. After the Prada branded super droid we spotted recently, we have another smartphone to come from the Korean company, dressed in fancy clothes. This time, the outfit is courtesy of the fashion house Jil Sander, and the phone is running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.

Judging by the E906 branding, we can guess that the device might be a version of the LG E900 Optimus 7, which we know quite well. The unknown model looks quite similar to the E900 at its front, save for the fancier design, and the updated OS. The trio of buttons below the screen have gotten a nice looking texture to them, while appearing to remain hardware ones. As far as the back of the device goes, it has been redesigned, compared to the Optimus 7, but the camera has retained the same spot. This leads us to think that the changes in the new smartphone might be only cosmetic.

At this point we don't have any other information on the good looking, mysterious smartphone. It is needless to say that we will keep you posted, should anything related to it pops up. In the meantime, take a look at a few more shots of the device below, and tell us what you make of it in the comments section.

The Optimus Sol (Sol means the Sun) comes with LG’s new 3.8-inch, 800 x 480 resolution, 'Ultra AMOLED' display, which according to LG has a two-fold advanced reflection rate compared to standard AMOLED displays, which gives it better clarity outdoors and lower image quality degradation.

LG and Sony settle patent dispute with a cross-licensing deal

Sony and LG have finally settled their patent dispute that concerned infringed patents on smartphones, TVs and Blu-ray technology.

gsmarena 001 LG and Sony settle patent dispute with a cross licensing deal

The dispute began after a technology sharing agreement expired three years ago and the two companies have exchanged a couple of blows in the US and European courts since then. A complaint was filed by Sony concerning LG smartphones in the US and LG accused Sony of infringing its Blu-ray video technology in the PlayStation 3. LG even got a court injunction in the Netherlands, where PlayStation 3 consoles were seized by customs.

Both company have now confirmed, however, that the battle is over and that they have signed a cross-licensing agreement that will allow each of them to use the other’s patents. There’s no saying if any money changed hands for the agreement to be reached, though.

Well that’s one patent war down, but still many many more to come as the technological world currently seems to be in a full blown patent war.

LG Thrill 4G (AT&T)

LG Thrill 4G (AT&T)

The LG Thrill 4G ($99.99) is a pleasant surprise: a well-rounded dual-core Android phone which comes with a bunch of 3D games, a 3D camera, and the ability to pipe 3D out to big-screen TVs. It's not perfect, but if its unique strengths appeal to you, it's an entertaining phone.

Physical Features and Call Quality
The LG Thrill 4G is a slab-style phone that looks a heck of a lot like every other black slab on the market, until you turn it over and see the two lenses for the 3D camera. At 5.0 by 2.7 by .5 inches (HWD) and 5.9 ounces it doesn't sound very heavy on paper, but for some reason the phone felt very dense to me, especially when compared with the larger yet lighter Sprint Motorola Photon 4G ($199, 4.5 stars). The phone's HDMI and USB ports are right next to each other on the left side, covered by swinging plastic doors. I found the Power button on the top panel a bit mushy. The Thrill also has a 3D button where the camera button should be. Over and over again, I kept clicking the button thinking it would either activate the camera or shoot a picture while in the camera app, and instead it activated the 3D mode.

I'm also not excited about the 4.3-inch, 800-by-480 screen. While it looks great indoors, with rich colors, it washes out too easily outdoors, sometimes showing fingerprints as much as the underlying image. The filter needed to turn the screen into a parallax-barrier 3D panel is at least partially at fault here.

A very good voice phone, reception on AT&T's 3G network was unusually strong in my tests. Sound through the earpiece was loud, and a bit muddy but not too bad. The earpiece didn't distort at high volumes. There was no side tone. The speakerphone was extremely loud and clear, one of the loudest I've heard recently. Transmissions were also excellent, clear and loud. The phone paired easily with my Aliph Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars) and triggered the accurate voice dialing. Talk time, at 8 hours 35 minutes, was solid.

There's one thing the Thrill isn't, though: 4G. You're getting HSPA 14.4 here, which is a 3G technology. Internet speeds were fast thanks to the dual-core processor and good signal strength: I got 3.5Mbps down and about 650Kbps up on several speed tests with the Ookla Speedtest.net app. The phone works as a tethered modem or Wi-Fi hotspot with the appropriate plan, and integrates 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. Its GPS locked in quickly in midtown Manhattan in my tests.

3D Performance
AT&T didn't call this phone the "LG Thrill 3D," and that's probably wise. While 3D is a great gimmick for the Thrill 4G, and the phone handles it better in many ways than Sprint's competing HTC EVO 3D ($199, 3 stars), the Thrill's screen just isn't up to the task of a fully 3D life.

LG makes it easier to find and use 3D content than HTC does. Right at the bottom of the home screen, there's an icon marked "3D Space" which launches a carousel of 3D content: the 3D camera mode, the gallery, games, and YouTube.

3D apps appear in their own folder in the App Drawer. The phone comes with three full, 3D games, and they're great games: Asphalt 6, NOVA HD and Let's Golf 2. An AT&T movie store, run by mSpot, rents expensive movies for $4.49-4.99/day, including some 3D titles.

The Thrill is also much better than the EVO 3D at playing 3D files you've gotten from elsewhere. If you have a 3D video, you can tell the phone how to display it; the Thrill had no problem showing movies I ripped off a 3D Blu-Ray disc, even through its HDMI port on a 3DTV.

But the Thrill's screen just isn't ideal. With its lower 800-by-480 resolution as compared with the EVO 3D's 960-by-540, photos and videos looked noticeably grainy, and my eyes had a lot of trouble locking in 3D planes. Also, just like the EVO 3D, the Thrill doesn't have a 3D viewing angle. It has a viewing point, and if you don't hold the phone in exactly the right place, you get double vision.

Android and App Performance
The Thrill 4G runs Android 2.2.2 on a TI OMAP 4430 chipset, the same dual-core, 1GHz processor found in the Motorola Droid 3 ($199, 3 stars) for Verizon Wireless. According to our benchmarks, it's of comparable speed to the Droid 3 and Nvidia Tegra 2-powered phones like the Motorola Atrix 4G ($199, 4 stars) and Motorola Photon, and faster than the HTC EVO 3D, not to mention single-core phones like the Samsung Captivate.

LG Prada K2 high-end droid shows up in blurry video

The Prada brand is coming back to the LG phone lineup, according to a leaked roadmap, and now there's an extra-blurry video of one such device - the LG Prada K2 - to back it up.

From what we've heard of the Prada K2, specs state that it's a dual-core Gingerbread droid with a 4.3-inch version of the excellent NOVA display. This one will be even brighter than the one on the Optimus Black, putting out a blinding 1,000 nits of brightness (the old one was 700 nits).

LG Prada K2 leaked image

An 8MP main camera, 1.3MP secondary camera, 16GB of storage and 21Mbps HSDPA were also on the list of rumored specs for the LG Prada K2. All this will, reportedly, be packed into a body just 8.8mm thick.

Anyway, here's a tiny shred of evidence that the Prada K2 exists - a low-res, blurry video.

It's not much to go on, but that's how it usually is in rumorland. If you're wondering what the "K2" stands for, it's to differentiate it from the LG K, which has a 4.5" 720p display. It's possible both LG K and Prada K2 are codenames though.

LG Q2 results: company profits, handsets on road to recovery

It's LG's turn to show its report card - things are looking up, but the handset division is still struggling to turn a profit. It posted a $49.8 million operating loss for the second quarter of 2011, though that's only about half of what it lost in Q1 2011.

Shipments of LG phones grew quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) to 24.8 million units, with smartphone numbers on the rise as feature phone demand decreases. Sales are up 11% QoQ to a total of $3 billion, thanks to better smartphone sales. However, on a Year-over-Year (YoY) basis, LG's sales are still are down 5%.

LG's handset division posted $49.8 million in operating loss, which is a market improvement over the $96.3 million operating loss for Q1 2011, or the $114.5 million operating loss for Q2 2010. This also marks the fifth consecutive quarter in which the handset division posts a loss.

The Optimus 2X was a strong performer for LG overall, joined by the Optimus One in the US and by the Optimus Black in Europe, where feature phone sales were weak. The Optimus 2X had various software issues, which plagued sales in the US, that LG is only now getting around to fixing, including pushing out the Gingerbread update.

For the next quarter, LG will be introducing new models to improve profitability and expects demand for 4G LTE and 3D capable handsets to heat up.

The company as a whole posted a net income of $103 million for this year's Q2, a sharp drop from the $816.6 million reported at Q2 2010. Nevertheless, after two quarters of loss (Q1 2011 and Q4 2010) and a break even quarter (Q3 2010) before that, those are encouraging results.

Home entertainment is largely responsible for the profitable second quarter of 2011, with Cinema 3D and LED TV sales pointed out as a main driving force. This bodes well for LG's hopes of good performance for their 3D-enabled mobile gadgets.
