HTC Desire S gets Gingerbread 2.3.5 and Sense 3.0

We first met the HTC Desire S at MWC in Barcelona, back in February earlier this year. As the natural successor to the HTC Desire. We saw performance improvements in terms of a better GPU, bigger amounts of RAM and ROM, and faster connectivity, but that aside, the step up wasn't as dramatic as we'd have liked.

Once it launched, the Desire S came running Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 and HTC's Sense 2.1 UI out of the box. The latest development however is that the next update for the Desire S, has started rolling out without so much as a whisper. Users in the UK are reporting that they've noticed the update innocuously popping up on their devices since the last day of September.

As with any ROM update, when you get the all important notification isn't exactly set in stone. The update appears to be coming to users in the UK with stock Desire S ROMs, so carrier specific variations will, as usual take a little longer.

With this update, not only does your S get a boost from Gingerbread 2.3.3 to 2.3.5, but Sense UI moves up to 3.0 which means key updates like the interactive lock screens, new animations, an updated launcher as well as a host of new widgets, the latest version of the Android Market and access to HTC's Watch service. Users are also reporting better GPS performance.

Back in May, at Google I/O, it was said that Android devices, at least from a group of selected manufacturers and carriers, would receive full support for at least 18 months after a device's launch. In this instance, it seems HTC are most certainly making good on that promise. We've had no word on carrier locked ROMs and when the update will spread overseas, but if you notice anything, let us know.

HTC Explorer Announced: Affordable Android for all

We've caught site of the HTC Explorer (formally the Pico) a couple of times previously, with both blurry cam and press shots in tow. Now however, it's time for the Explorer to strut its stuff officially. Today HTC announced the HTC Explorer as their latest Android device.

It finds itself as the most compact of its brothers measuring just 102.8mm x 57.2mm x 12.9mm and sporting a 3.2" HVGA display. The Explorer comes into HTC's product range underneath the Wildfire/Wildfire S and puts the Brew-based HTC Smart out to pasture whilst it's at it.

Being the scrawny new handset in the smartphone world can be daunting, but the Explorer has got a decent amount of hardware to keep it afloat. It essentially runs the Wildfire S hardware rebodied, but with HTC's intentions to make this their most affordable smartphone yet, aspects like the camera resolution have been turned down to 3.15MP (from the Wildfire S' 5MP unit) for example.

Beyond this however, the Explorer promises a full Android smartphone experience, complete with the latest Sense 3.5 UI. There's full web browsing with Flash support, social network integration and many other popular features that HTC consistently improve on.

A couple of extra features, unique to the Explorer that HTC are pleased to point out are the inbuilt data monitor, which based on the users they expect to go for this device, allows you to track and manage your data allowance and usage on your package, without looking for a 3rd party management system.

One other key ability that the Explorer possess is an exchangeable back cover system. Nothing new on its own, but the first in the current line of HTC droids, presumably just to mix things up. Colors include; Active Black, Active Navy, Metallic Black and Metallic Navy when purchased, with India-based customers having the additional options of Active Royal and Metallic Royal. Extra covers can be purchased separately in a further 4 colors at least; Active Blue, Active Orange, Active White and Active Purple.

The HTC Explorer should become available in Q4 this year with planned launches in key markets in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia.

For now that's all we can tell you about the new HTC Explorer, but we have a sneaking suspicion it might pop up at a certain upcoming London event. If so we'll do the decent thing and grab both stills and a hands-on, naturally, but until then, we'll have to just keep staring at the pictures.

HTC Runnymede/Bass shown off in quick video, still not official

The HTC Runnymede peeks out of the rumor mill again, this time on video. It’s been spotted before, but seeing an actual running device means that it’s either very close to completion or already completed – and an official announcement can’t be too far off.

gsmarena 001 HTC Runnymede/Bass shown off in quick video, still not official

The Runnymede, or perhaps Bass, puts a 4.7″ WVGA S-LCD screen and Beats Audio in the same package as a 1.5GHz single-core CPU, among other specs.

Being a Beats Audio device, it’s a safe bet that the HTC Runnymede will come with an above-average headset as the other Beats-branded HTC phones. Rumor has it that it will cost £530 for the 16GB version (that’s $820) or £560 for the 32GB ($865). Keep in mind that the headset alone will run you about £65 ($100).

Check out the video:

An eager UK retailer put up an unlocked Runnymede for pre-order, calling it the HTC Bass, so that’s probably the name to look out for (around Europe at least). The one in the video shows Vodafone branding on screen, so chances are it will be available with carrier subsidies too.

The HTC Runnymede/Bass is the second contender for the guest of honor spot in HTC’s October 6th event, along with the HTC Amaze 4G. Which of the would you like to see more unveiled on the 6th?

HTC event to be held on September 20

The invite does not elaborate regarding what it could be about and a 'Come celebrate in style with HTC' is all we get. But it is being said that the event could be regarding the launch of the women-centric HTC Bliss handset.

The event could also be about any of the other HTC phones that have been leaked recently, including the HTC Vigor, the HTC Ruby or the HTC Holiday. Whichever it is (we hope it's all of them), we will find out on the 20th.

HTC uses patents purchased from Google to sue Apple

The legal battle between Apple and the Rest of the World™ continues, with one of their opponents - HTC - making a surprising move. It is suing Apple back with its own patents, but not just any patents but patents purchased from Google.

Yes, Google has decided to step in and protect one of its partners by selling some key patents to HTC for an undisclosed amount. It's interesting why Google did not choose to sue Apple directly. Perhaps they just wanted to make some money, after losing a lot purchasing Motorola Mobility. Or they just didn't want to get their hands dirty. But anyway, HTC's patent portfolio is now bolstered and it is ready to fight Apple on its own turf.

While some may say that Apple is using its own patents that they developed themselves against those merely purchased by HTC, at the end of the day, patents are patents and the law does not care whether they are developed or purchased. If Apple is found guilty, they will have to face the consequences, as did Samsung in Germany.

Google Gives HTC a Patent Assist to Sue Apple

HTC Android

In an apparent "enemy-of-my-enemy" twist in the escalating intellectual property war between tech giants over mobile technology, HTC on Tuesday sued Apple for patent infringement in a Delaware court, citing patents recently obtained from Google.

HTC amended a complaint to charge Apple with infringing eight U.S. patents pertaining to wireless communications and mobile phone displays, according to reports. Five of the patents cited had been assigned to HTC by Google last week.

The other three patents had already been cited in HTC's original complaint filed in August and had nothing to do with Google, which makes the Android mobile operating system that is used by HTC and other device manufacturers in smartphones and tablets that compete with Apple's in-house iOS-based iPhone and iPad.

HTC has also amended a separate complaint against Apple filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission to include the five patents obtained by Google, which has confirmed that it has assigned the patents in question to HTC.

Apple is currently embroiled in several legal battles over intellectual property related to mobile technology for smartphones and tablets. The Cupertino, Calif.-based computing giant has targeted HTC, Samsung, and other device makers with allegations of patent infringement, though those suits have been described as peripheral battles to the "open war" being waged between Apple and Google.

Aside from the litigation, the Google-Apple tilt has also developed into a war of words. Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt has claimed that Apple is "suing instead of innovating," while an Apple spokesperson said of HTC's legal assist from Google Tuesday that "competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours."

Google, stymied in its bid to acquire 6,000 wireless technology patents held by Nortel in June, is believed to have performed a bit of an end-around on the alleged "consortium" of tech rivals that beat it to the Nortel patents when the search giant announced plans in mid-August to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion.

That deal, which would enrich Google with the mobile technology patents it so clearly covets to take on Apple, still awaits approval from regulators. But the search giant's gifting of patents to bolster HTC's case against Apple demonstrates that Google has more than one trick up its sleeve.

Patent Reform Before U.S. Senate Meanwhile, the U.S. Senate is expected to pass some form of patent reform in the next few days that could potentially change the landscape for the current intellectual property battles that some observers feel are stifling true innovation and competition in the tech sector.

"Patent reform is long overdue in the U.S., where innovation holds the keys to our economic recovery, as well as to our long term, global competitiveness," said patent attorney and IP Street founder Lewis Lee, whose firm Lee & Hayes represents six of the 20 largest patent filers in the U.S., regarding patent reform being considered by the Senate.

"The timing couldn't be more urgent, because China has made bold moves in the past few years to overtake the U.S. on every innovation measure before the decade is out, and just this year surpassed the U.S. on the number of patent filings," Lee said.

But the patent attorney did not hold out hope that the legislation before the Senate would do much to address such challenges in its current iteration.

"[The bill] will not help the U.S. overcome the China challenge, and only marginally addresses some longstanding issues like patent office funding," he said. "If the [U.S. Patent and Trademark Office] can truly reinvest all of the fees it charges filers then the net effect should be a patent system that is more agile and scalable.

"Despite the incremental improvements in this bill, it leaves the hard work for future Congresses. It fails to address secrecy, one of the most unsettling features of our patent system today. Although the U.S. has the most transparent economic engine in the world, patent ownership remains opaque. Far too many patents are owned by entities that conceal their true identities, making it difficult to efficiently trade patents as real property. This is a significant roadblock to the U.S. retaining its No. 1 status as the most trusted, transparent place to manage intellectual assets, and can only be addressed by more legislation.

HTC Holiday poses for the camera one more time

At first it leaked through some spy pics and then someone actually bought a damaged unit off Craigslist, just to photograph and put up its pictures on the Internet. But now we have some proper pictures of the AT&T-bound HTC Holiday, courtesy BGR.

There is nothing dramatically new about the device that we didn't see in the pictures below. Except the gold contacts that we saw on the battery cover on the Craigslist device are now missing again, the way they were when the device was first spotted.

BGR also managed to get a feel of AT&T's upcoming LTE network on the Holiday. The results are mighty impressive, with 29.71Mbps down and 6.43Mbps up. Having said that, the high speeds are likely due to the lack of any users on the network at the moment.

Coming back to the Holiday, in case you are not familiar with it, the device is said to have a 4.5-inch qHD display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 8 megapixel camera capable of 1080p video, Android 2.3.4 running Sense 3.0. As you can guess, there is not much information available about the price and release date at the moment. Click on the source link for more images.

Shots emerge of the HTC Flyer running Honeycomb, we can nearly taste it

After the recent leak of an RUU (ROM update utility), was found to contain an early beta build of Android 3.2 Honeycomb destined for the HTC Flyer, hacking masters including Paul O’Brien from MoDaCo, set about making it into a usable ROM for users with rooted devices to try out.

gsmarena 001 Shots emerge of the HTC Flyer running Honeycomb, we can nearly taste it

One such user from the XDA forums has provided screenshots to the internets of this Honeycomb ROM running on their 32GB 3G HTC Flyer. As the ‘Settings’ image states, we’re seeing the same ’1.1 for Tablet’ version of Sense UX as with the cripplingly expensive HTC Puccini/Jetstream.

The actual process of turning your Gingerbread Flyer into a Honeycomb one is not without its dangers as is often the case however. Until the ROM has been made into a easy to use flashable zip file, a lot of tweaking, tinkering and risk is involved. Still interested? Then you can find the instructions here and for the rest of you, not so comfortable as to take the plunge or for those with non-rooted Flyer’s, you’ll have to be patient whilst HTC decide when to make it an official release for you to enjoy.

HTC Jetstream online in AT&T store, live pics, video and benchmarks inside

The HTC Jetstream is now official and heading to AT&T with LTE connectivity, 10.1″ screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 1 gig of RAM, 8 MP camera on its back and HTC Sense on top of its Android Honeycomb OS. It’s a very appealing slate by any standards. But it’s steep – prices start from $699.99 on a two-year deal.

HTC Ruby gets caught in more spyshots, shows its specs

We have seen shots of the upcoming HTC Ruby on a couple of occasions before. This time, the device got caught in Thailand, sporting a black outfit, and lacking any mobile network logos.

As you can see from the photos above, the specs, which we have already reported to you are all but confirmed. They include a dual-core CPU, clocked at 1.5GHz, a gig of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. The device will feature an 8MP camera, and a 4.3" qHD screen.

Strangely enough, the HTC Sense UI seems to be missing from the device, caught in the shots. The menu launcher appears to be a stock Android one. Rumor has it however, that, when launched, the HTC Ruby will be sporting Sense 3.5, along with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The device should be getting an official announcement in the nearest future. As always, we will keep you posted.

HTC Jetstream to hit AT&T

AT&T’s first 4G LTE/HSPA+ tablet has arrived – and it will not be anything from Apple that is leading the charge, especially when Apple’s iPad 2 does not carry true 4G connectivity. No sir, the task is left up to HTC’s Jetstream (referred to as the Puccini by some in its earlier days), and to make the release all the more memorable, HTC has deemed the Jetstream to be the first tablet from the company that runs on the Android 3.1 Honeycomb operating system which was specially developed to cater for tablets.

This is not going to be any small, wimpy tablet that is going to fit into your purse effortlessly – no sir, it will rock your eyes with a 10.1″ High Definition display instead, while a 1.5GHz Snapdragon dual-core processor runs proceedings from within without any hiccups, considering the amount of processing firepower that it contains. To know more about the HTC Jetstream from AT&T, head on after the jump.

Just what are the other hardware specifications? For starters, the HTC Jetstream will play nice with HTC Scribe, which is an optional digital pen accessory (you might have seen it in action before with HTC’s first tablet, the Flyer), although you will need to purchase that on a separate account. A 1.3-megapixel front facing camera is there for video calls, while the rear camera fares much better in the resolution count at 8-megapixels, complete with a Dual LED flash to boot. In addition, you will get a bunch of pre-loaded AT&T programs including AT&T Family Map and AT&T Navigator to help you get started right out of the box.

The big question is, how much will you need to pay for something so new and shiny? AT&T has slapped an already reduced price point of $699.99 as long as you decide to sign up with a new two-year contract – makes you wonder just how much the thing costs when it comes unlocked? There are two monthly billing options to choose from – postpaid, which is $14.99 for 250MB or $25 for 2GB, while prepaid customers will have to fork out $14.99 for 250MB or $25 for 2GB.

HTC Radar video ads surface, check them out

The HTC PR team just released the first batch of video ads for the HTC Radar WP7 smartphone, which was announced yesterday. So grab the popcorn, make yourselves comfortable and get ready to be treated to a few dozes of Mango goodness.

gsmarena 001 HTC Radar video ads surface, check them out

HTC has identified four key selling points of the Radar and has dedicated a video to each of them. According to the Taiwanese company the main reasons to go for the Radar are its cool looks, its great camera, its spotless connectivity and sharing options and the great entertainment option it provides.

HTC Titan features in a bunch of ads, makes you want it even more

Just like the HTC Radar earlier today, the HTC Titan just got to star in a bunch of ads published on its manufacturer’s website. The WP7 Mango smartphone with a 4.7″ screen is unsurprisingly looking pretty hot in the four videos that you are about to see.

gsmarena 001 HTC Titan features in a bunch of ads, makes you want it even more

Actually those videos cover pretty much the same bases as the HTC Radar ads, but for one exception. The Taiwanese company obviously thinks that the Titan will be more skilled at multitasking than its smaller-screen’d sibling and with a 1.5GHz CPU we can see where this is coming from.

HTC Titan and Radar prices revealed, seems quite high

HTC Titan and Radar were officially announced yesterday at a public event that we covered live for you. And while that did give us most pieces of the puzzle, one of the most important ones was missing – we knew nothing about the pricing of either WP7 smartphone.

gsmarena 001 HTC Titan and Radar prices revealed, seems quite high

Now we hear that an HTC representative went on record saying that the HTC Titan will cost €609 ($868), while HTC radar will go for €399 ($569). Granted, those are European prices (German, to be specific), and they include 19% VAT, but they still seem a bit too high to us.

Maybe HTC sees its Titan and Radar babies as some high-end monsters that will be able to battle it out with the Galaxy S IIs and the iPhones of this world, but we believe WP7 isn’t there yet. And with the platform still playing catch up, there’s no way that the smartphones carrying it will be valued higher than their competitors.

Only time will tell, though, so let’s wait and see how things unfold.

Faster HTC Sensation with Beats tech on its way, specs inside

A new HTC Sensation is on its way with a faster Qualcomm 8260 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, internal storage has been upgraded to 4 gigs and finally it will have a beefier battery by some good 210 mAh (1.730 mAh in total).

The HTC Sensation with Beats by Dr. Dre audio technology will also ship with complimentary special edition headphones with remote control for faster music selection.

Here's a chart with more detailed specs on the new HTC Sensation.

The expected price for the device will be about $847, which is a bargain considering that a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones cost around $119.

There's no information on availability yet but we expect the device to be announced today at one of HTC's global events.

HTC Jetstream for AT&T, a.k.a. the Puccini, gets official, starts selling on September 4 for an absurd price

The HTC Puccini leaked enough number of times that we are now well acquainted with it. All that was remaining was for HTC to make it official, which they just have. The device will be launching on the AT&T network in the US on September 4.

gsmarena 001 HTC Jetstream for AT&T, a.k.a. the Puccini, gets official, starts selling on September 4 for an absurd price

Let’s go over the spec sheet again. The HTC Pucc… I mean the Jetstream will have a 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 resolution display and will support for AT&T’s 4G LTE and HSPA+ networks. It will run on a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8660 Snapdragon processor and Android 3.1 Honeycomb, with the Sense UI layer on top.

On the back we have an 8 megapixel camera capable of recording 1080p videos and on the front is a 1.3 megapixel camera. The Jetstream will also work with the Scribe pen that we saw with the HTC Flyer and will be included free of charge for a limited time. There is no mention about the amount of internal memory from AT&T but the Jetstream will have support for microSD cards.

Now here comes the shocker. The HTC Jetstream will cost you $699.99, but, on a two year contract. This is the first time we are seeing a tablet being sold for such a high price on a contract. We hope AT&T gets its act together if they ever intend to sell these things. Even a die-hard Android or HTC fan wouldn’t spend that much for a device locked in a two year contract.

HTC Sense 3.5 gets poked on video

We recently saw the upcoming Sense 3.5 in leaked screenshots but now there is an entire hands-on video of a phone running the said UI. The phone running this UI itself is a yet-to-be-announced HTC Bliss, said to be targeted towards women.

From the video we can see that the lockscreen has seen minimal changes from 3.0 and in fact looks nearly identical. The first changes are seen on the homescreen, with new widgets on the side and a lack of the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. You still get the same seven homescreens with the helicopter view. The notification screen looks identical as well to that on 3.0.

The similarities continue with the rest of the UI, but you can still spot some changes, such as a new look for the tabs that appear at the bottom of the screen of certain apps. The transition effects in the UI have also been changed and they now are bit flashier. Overall the UI does seem snappy though, something we could not tell with the screenshots before, so all that glitz isn’t coming at the cost of usability.

HTC unlocks the bootloader on Sensation 4G, now just three more phones to go

Few months back HTC had decided that it would be better to start selling their phones with locked bootloader and so they did exactly that, resulting in the Thunderbolt 4G, Desire S, Incredible S, EVO 3D, Sensation and the Sensation 4G to be sold with locked bootloaders.

gsmarena 001 HTC unlocks the bootloader on Sensation 4G, now just three more phones to go

Later though they realized that they were wrong to lock the bootloaders, this realization aided immensely by the uproar in the Android community who prefer to have complete access to their software. This made HTC revise their bootloader policy and the first phone to benefit from this was the Sensation.

Soon HTC quietly unlocked the bootloader on the EVO 3D as well and now we are hearing news that the Sensation 4G has been unlocked as well. This leaves just three more phones still stuck with locked bootloaders but I guess they will be unlocked soon too (as it is a lot of people have had success in unlocking them unofficially).

So if you are the owner of a Sensation 4G then you should head over to the HTC developer website (check source) and unlock your phone, if you intend to install custom ROMs and such. Also, be sure to read through the list of warnings to know what you might stand to lose once you break open that lock.
