Samsung Galaxy Note coming to AT&T following FCC approval

The Samsung Galaxy Note looks to be gracing the US of A with its presence following the FCC's recent approval of the device's support for AT&T's 3G bands, news that will no doubt bring a smile to gadget-heads across the nation.

The Note is somewhat of an odd breed of device. Following the rise of mobile phones and the subsequent fall of PDA's. The Note takes the notion of a throwback and adds every modern smart-device garnish it has to offer on top, meaning you get all of the mod-cons you expect from a device such as this, but an underlying sense of nostalgia too, it's truly bizarre.

The Note looks to fill the void between Samsung's 4.3"-endowed Galaxy S II smartphone and the recently announced Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, as the intermediary tab-phone crossover device with its 5.3" SuperAMOLED display.

What's really great about the Note's new FCC approval is that it not only includes support for AT&T's 3G bands but will also be capable of '4G' (read HSPA+) speeds which is no bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.

If you want to learn more about the Samsung Galaxy Note this very second, why not click here where you'll be able to check out our latest hands-on to at least cover the key features of the device preceding our in depth review, just around the corner.

Samsung Galaxy Note hands-on: First look

The Samsung Galaxy Note is a player in a game of numbers - and it's drawing higher numbers than the competition. Starting with the 5.3" 1280x800 pixels SuperAMOLED screen on the outside and all the way to the beefed up Exynos chipset inside with two 1.4GHz cores, the Galaxy Note has +1 on all its specs.

Samsung Galaxy Note

This is hardly where the numbers end, here are a few more - 285ppi for the screen, 9.65mm thick, 8MP still camera, 1080p video camera, 2,500 mAh battery. It's either a Galaxy S II on steroids or a smaller Galaxy Tab 7.7. Whichever way you look at it, the Galaxy Note is an impressive piece of kit.

On top of that (or rather, on the bottom) we have the S Pen, an active stylus, which can be used to jot down notes, control the S Planner organizer and more. The stylus slides into the body, which means it's always around when you need it.

We haven’t had enough time with the Note - it literally arrived in our office a couple of hours ago - but enough for a quick hands-on. These are our initial impressions of the hardware and the camera. We've thrown in a bonus user interface video, so enjoy.

This test unit was kindly provided by CT MIAMI, a Samsung distributor for Latin America. The Galaxy Note will be available at CT MIAMI for wholesale customers on October 24 for $699.

Samsung Nexus Prime coming October 11th with Android 4.0 ICS

Brace yourselves, fellas, for October will be one hell of a month for the mobile industry. The next iPhone will break cover on 4th, HTC will follow up with a phone of their own on the 6th and now we have confirmation that Google's next flagship will be announced a week later - on October 11th. Yeap, we are just two weeks away from seeing the Samsung-made Nexus Prime.

The Korean company has already sent-out the invitations for the Unpacked event, which will be held at the CTIA expo and will be co-hosted by Google. And that might mean just one thing - it will be the event that will see the introduction of Android Ice cream sandwich and its first bearer - the Nexus Prime.

This also aligns nicely with the lengthy video demo of new Android version that we saw this morning. The platform seemed in pretty good shape on that demo, so it should be ready to hit the stage.

And it's not just the new reincarnation of the world's best-selling popular OS that deserves attention. The Samsung Nexus Prime should be a pretty hot piece of technology itself with its rumored 4.65" HD Super AMOLED screen and powerful Exynos chipset with a couple of 1.5 GHz CPU cores.

October seems like the month that will set the tone for the next year or so in the smartphone race.

Samsung Galaxy S II Android 2.3.5 update leaks – yours to try, if you dare

We already knew that Samsung are about to release an Android 2.3.5 update for the original Galaxy S, so the fact that its successor is getting the same treatment is not exactly shocking news. What you might be more excited to know is that one of the Samsung-made Android 2.3.5-based ROMs has escaped the security at their R&D centers and is, available to everyone that would like to give it a try right now.

gsmarena 001 Samsung Galaxy S II Android 2.3.5 update leaks yours to try, if you dare

We are not quite sure if it’s worth voiding your warranty, though, as Android 2.3.5 isn’t such a major update. We don’t have an official changelog for it, but from what we’ve seen so far, the improvements brought by it are focused in the Gmail app.

Still, if you feel like getting it, you might follow this link for instructions and download links. A quick registration is required, though. Alternatively, you might want to check out this forum for the first custom ROM based on the new Android release.

Samsung shamefully covers up Apple AppStore icons with S letters

Remember that Italian Samsung store that had its decor feature some unmistakable iOS icons? Sure, you do. It seems Samsung were rather quick to act on this one and fixed the whole thing by sticking the letter S (as in Galaxy S) over the Apple icons.

gsmarena 001 Samsung shamefully covers up Apple AppStore icons with S letters

Well, I find the whole situation rather funny and had I seen the store in person I would have Facebooked the hell out of the wrong background just for the fun of it. But I bet funny it is not to the people who worked at the store and became the laughing stock of the Internet community.

Above you see the fixed decor, while below you will see the same store several days back.

Samsung is the top smartphone vendor in Western Europe in Q2

The premier market intelligence firm IDC released its Q2 2011 mobile phone shipment estimates in Western Europe today, marking a fundamental shift in the market for mobile phones. For the first time, the smartphone shipments outnumbered the feature phone ones on the Old Continent.

This change is mostly attributed to the significant rise of Android OS's adoption (352% year over year) according to IDC. The Google OS devices account for 48.5% of the total smartphone shipments.

As far as manufacturers go, Samsung has the top spot in smartphone shipments with 22% market share, followed closely by Apple, which has 21% of the smartphone market. The Korean giant's performance can be considered more than impressive, as the company's smartphone shipments have grown by 700% year over year, compared to 64% for Apple. Nokia is the big loser in the smartphone race with a 60% decline in shipments, compared to the same period of last year. However, the Finnish company is still the top mobile phone vendor in Western Europe, when smartphones and feature phones get combined, with 37% market share.

The remainder of 2011 will be more than eventful with Apple iPhone 5 being the most anticipated product launch. It will be interesting to see what kind of splash will the latest iPhone make, and will it be able to alter the market share landscape. As always, we will keep you posted.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 review: Droid at large

Tablets are basking in well-deserved attention and manufacturers know they need to try hard and make their devices distinct and memorable. Truly unique gadgets are hard to come by these days - especially in Honeycomb land. Which is perhaps part of the reason why iPad is still the one to beat. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G is in for a challenge, and up for it.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Tab 8.9 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Tab 8.9 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Tab 8.9 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Tab 8.9
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 official photos

Shortly after launch the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was blessed with a custom user experience, called Touch Wiz UX, which literally puts more color into Honeycomb, offers a good selection of customizable widgets and most importantly tries to ease your way into Android for tablets.

Yet this tablet’s main advantage remains that it’s the most portable 10” slate to hit the market. It's thinner even than iPad 2 and good 42 grams lighter than Apple's frontrunner, while still promising to match its battery performance. And that's no mean feat since tablets are going hard after netbooks, so they need to back their portability with battery longevity.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, a bright 10.1" PLS TFT display of WXGA resolution, a premium set of connectivity options and plenty of storage space. Check out the full list of things going for (and against) the Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G below.

Key features

  • 10.1" 16M-color PLS TFT capacitive touchscreen of WXGA (1280 x 800 pixels) resolution
  • Very lightweight at just 565 g
  • Thinnest slate to date at just 8.6 mm
  • Gorilla Glass display
  • Tegra 2 chipset: Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor; 1GB of RAM; ULP GeForce GPU
  • Android 3.1 Honeycomb with TouchWiz UX UI
  • Optional quad-band GPRS/EDGE and tri-band 3G with HSDPA 21 Mbps connectivity
  • 16/32/64 GBGB of built-in memory
  • 3.2 MP autofocus camera, 2048x1536 pixels, LED flash, geotagging
  • 2.0 MP front-facing camera; video calls
  • 720p HD video recording @ 30 fps
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi Direct, dual-band, Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Proprietary 30-pin connector port for charging
  • Stereo Bluetooth v3.0
  • HDMI TV-out (adapter required), USB host (adapter required)
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Flash 10.3 support
  • GPS with A-GPS support; digital compass
  • DivX/XviD support (fullHD), MP4 support up to HD
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor; three-axis Gyroscope sensor
  • Polaris office document editor comes preinstalled
  • 7000 mAh Li-Po rechargeable battery

Main disadvantages

  • Non-replaceable battery
  • No microSD card support
  • No standard USB port
  • No Android Honeycomb 3.2 yet
  • No GSM voice capabilities despite the available SIM slot

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 at ours

Samsung are bringing their A game in the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Not that it should be judged by sheer size but the company's biggest tablet is fit to be in charge and meet the competition head on. Whether it's watching films, browsing the web, gaming, video-calls, or imaging, this is one of the best-equipped tablets out there.

The screen quality, the added TouchWiz UX functionality, the good battery and excellent media make it a must-see. The whole package looks like the right mix of style and substance, but we just won't rush to a verdict. The Galaxy Tab had a promising start in our preview. With all the finishing touches in place, it's ready to give its best. Head on past the break to see what the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is made of.

A quad-core Windows 8-running tablet from Samsung coming next week?

As far as news from the electronics business go, it doesn’t get much more exciting than this. If the latest bit of online rumor is true (and given that it comes from Korea Economic Daily that’s quite probable) we are just a week away from seeing the first Windows 8-running tablet. And the first tablet with a quad-core CPU. And the first Windows device with an ARM processor. And the best bit is, those aren’t three different devices.

gsmarena 001 A quad core Windows 8 running tablet from Samsung coming next week?

According to the industry source that went all chatty in front of the Korean newspaper, Samsung will manufacture the slate that will be given to developers at the upcoming Microsoft BUILD event next week. It will be running the software giant’s newest OS and will rely on NVIDIA’s Kal-El chipset.

Now, the unnamed Samsung slate probably won’t make it to the market as the Windows 8 OS is still some way off completion and by the time Microsoft is done with the i-dotting and t-crossing, Samsung will probably have better hardware to offer. So developers attending the event will be the only lucky guys and gals to get a taste of the described awesomeness this year.

Your thoughts? Would you be willing to sacrifice the great number of available Windows apps for the superior battery life provided by the ARM CPUs? Or will you be waiting for a slate with Intel-made internals instead?

Would you buy a phone like this? Samsung hopes so.

What you are looking at in this picture is not a phone that is on the market today, but really should be. It is a concept phone by a designer named Heyon You for Samsung.

It is made from two AMOLED panels, a protective glasses cover, module case, and silicone rubber. It also has a foldable display, which is not new technology in the sense that someone has done it before. I’ve been hearing about foldable and rollable displays since I started reporting about tech 5 years ago.

I always thought that whoever gets their hands on the flexible display could make a killing, but they would have to work well. Samsung has stated that this bendable display can take a punishment of 100,000 folds before a six percent decrease in brightness along the seam.

My Source describes this phone as a clam-shell/candy-bar hybrid. It also suggested that a folded screen can display information like time, missed calls, text messages, and other quick info that my old clamshell phone displayed. When the phone is opened, the user can have access to all the apps.

I am all for that. Personally, I think that our phones have screens that are too small for what they can do. Just imagine a smartphone that can unfold into a tablet. Oh, the possibilities are endless.

Support page for Samsung I9250 is up, we also get some specs

The evidence that the Samsung I9250 is nearing its launch is becoming overwhelming - yesterday it was a leaked user agent profile and today brings us a dummy support page for the I9250.

The page is pretty much empty besides some FAQ and How-to entries that don't belong to the Samsung I9250 (one of them is for the Omnia 7, for example).

Anyway, the I9250 is supposed to be the next Nexus phone - the Nexus Prime. It will be the first device with the next generation Android - Ice Cream Sandwich, which is hopefully coming out in October.

Those rumors are pretty certain, unlike the rest of the specs for the Samsung I9250/Nexus Prime. A tipster who is a well informed source from the industry has dropped us a few tidbits of info, which give us a clearer picture of the I9250 but also negate some of the earlier rumors.

For one, our tipster says that the final name of the next Google flagship is Samsung Galaxy Nexus rather than Nexus Prime. It will have a 4.65" screen of HD resolution - not 4.5" WVGA.

Samsung already has SuperAMOLEDs with HD resolution, so seing one of them on the next Google flagship makes quite a lot of sense.

Anyway, the screen is curved just like the Nexus S screen. The device itself will be very thin - 8.8mm - and have a metal chassis, unlike previous models.

Our tipster also clued us in on the launch date - at the end of October (right on the Ice Cream Sandwich schedule), supposedly just after the iPhone 5 launch. If that's true, it's bound to cause quite a stir.

Samsung Nexus Prime confirmed by a leaked UAProf

The Samsung Nexus Prime has appeared in a user agent profile (UAProf) on the Samsung website. The device model number will be I9250 and it will have a 480x800 (WVGA) resolution display. Previous rumors hinted at 720p screen ala Galaxy Note, but that's obviously not happening.

There's nothing else that we can deduce from this leak, but previous rumors suggested that the Nexus Prime will pack a 4.5-incher of the SuperAMOLED (Plus or not) variety and an Exynos chipset with a dual-core 1.5GHz processor.

Last, but not least it will feature the latest version of Android - 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Samsung Galaxy S5690 Xcover preview: First look

The Samsung S5690 Galaxy Xcover brings a touch of class and authority to a lineup of durable dumb phones for the outdoor enthusiasts. It’s arguable whether it can take as much bashing as its less sophisticated siblings, but this rugged smartphone is trying to combine the best of both worlds.

The Galaxy Xcover is Samsung’s response to Motorola, who are building their own squad of tough droids, with a 1GHz Gingerbread-powered update of their Defy due for imminent release. The Defy+ could be too strong a rival, but the rugged credentials will certainly help the Galaxy Xcover stand out in the crowded smartphone midrange.

Samsung Galaxy Xcover official photos

It's an IP67 certified droid, meaning it can be immersed in one meter of water and last there for half an hour, on top of being dust-proof and shock-resistant. Ruggedness aside, it offers a 3.65" HVGA display with tempered Gorilla Glass for maximum protection and durability. It does well to meet, and exceed, the minimum smartphone requirements with solid connectivity, the latest flavor of Android and reasonably fast processing.

Samsung S5690 Galaxy Xcover at a glance:

  • General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 900/2100 MHz, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
  • Form factor: Touchscreen bar phone
  • Dimensions: 122 x 66 x 12 mm, 116 g
  • Display: 3.65" 16M-color TFT capacitive touchscreen, Gorilla Glass scratch-resistant display, 320 x 480 pixels resolution
  • CPU: Marvell MG2 800 MHz processor, 512MB RAM
  • Memory: 150MB storage, microSD card slot
  • OS: Android OS, v2.3.4 Gingerbread
  • Camera: 3.2 megapixel camera with geotagging; VGA video recording
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, stereo Bluetooth 3.0, standard microUSB port, GPS receiver with A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack
  • Misc: TouchWiz 3.0 UI, built-in accelerometer, multi-touch input, proximity sensor, Swype input, IP67 certified: dust and water resistant

The Samsung S5690 Galaxy Xcover runs Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, with the home-baked TouchWiz skin on top. It looks the part too with rugged, ribbed sides and a grippy rear panel with a massive lock screw to keep the battery cover in place.

It's the perfect fit if you want to buy a smartphone with a distinct outdoorsy feel. It's no Galaxy S II and it shows. At least it’s a phone that doesn’t mind a bumpy ride down the dirt road.

Samsung Galaxy S II LTE arriving in Europe in 2012, Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE this December

Samsung has announced an LTE version of their popular Galaxy S II smartphone as well as the Galaxy Tab 8.9. The Galaxy S II LTE will feature an updated hardware, where the CPU clock speed will be bumped to 1.5GHz from the 1.2GHz on the current model and the display will be taken to 4.5-inch from the 4.3-inch on the standard Galaxy S II.

gsmarena 001 Samsung Galaxy S II LTE arriving in Europe in 2012, Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE this December

The LTE model will be launched in Europe in the second quarter of 2012 on T-Mobile’s network. The delay is due to the fact that T-Mobile’s LTE network is currently not equipped to handle voice calls. Also, the device itself is not ready to go on sale at the moment.

As for the Galaxy Tab 8.9, it is slated to go on sale in December this year, the lack of voice support on the current LTE network not being an issue for a tablet.

Samsung MV800 Flipscreen Camera

One of the problems with reporting on cameras is that they are all very much alike. Once I report on the Megapixels and memory, I then list off a bunch of the usual features.

Samsung’s MV800 Point and Shoot (P&S) camera has one incredibly interesting feature that I have never seen before. It has a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen display that can be flipped 180 degrees. This comes in handy for self-shots and low-angles shots, and for when you want to prop it up.

I suppose that you can also flip the screen over and view the contents of the microSD/SDHC card. That’s right, it takes the microSD instead of the usual SD. That’s another unique feature that will probably become more common, if it isn’t already on P & S cameras.

Well, we might as well describe the usual features. It has a 5X optical zoom and 16.1 Megapixels. It also has some interesting software inside for filters, panoramas, photo touch-ups, effects, plus in-camera cropping.

There is no word of when this camera is going to be launched, but it would be wise of Mr. Samsung to get this out before the holidays. The price is about $279.99, and I’m not certain where it will be available.

Samsung NX200 camera does a bang-up job

When it comes to digital cameras, Samsung is a relatively new player to the game if you compare their history with the other more established players such as Pentax, Olympus, Nikon and Canon – but that doesn’t mean Samsung is no good at it; no sir, Samsung has picked up the pace in the game rather fast, and with their latest NX200 compact system camera, it is capable of delivering professional standard photography in a relatively small package.

Yes sir, the Samsung NX200 is said to guarantee an easy experience which allows you to unleash your creativity to the maximum thanks to a bunch of high-performance features that have been included in the compact premium metallic design, where it no longer leaves you with the dilemma of picking between style and quality images.

With the Samsung NX200, you will be able to achieve the balance between design and professional performance, where you get DSLR quality imaging in a compact form factor, thanks to its 20.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor that was developed specially by Samsung themselves. Guess this will ultimately help lower the price point of Samsung’s shooters since there is no need to pass the extra cost down to the consumer if Samsung were to obtain the sensor from another party.

The NX200 is capable of hitting 100ms Advanced AF speed courtesy of its Fast Boot and seven frames per second continuous shooting, and heck, you need not miss that crucial moment in your life as you are able to move from shot to shot in only 400ms. Apart from that, there is a wide range ISO (100-12800, covering seven steps) gives life-like color and sharp details, while shooting in low light conditions is a snap.

Not only that, you can also capture video instead of stills at 1920 × 1080 resolution at 30fps. No idea on pricing or availability just yet, but if you’re at IFA 2011, you can check it out there.

Samsung is pretty serious when it comes to churning out tablets that hopefully, will contain enough firepower in the specifications list to usurp the iPad 2 (and its subsequent successors for sure), and while their original 7″ Galaxy Tab did not really take the world by storm, the sequel after that, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 certainly proved to be quite a stunner. Not one who rests on their laurels, Samsung has yet another tablet released for the masses – the Galaxy Tab 7.7 which is also the first tablet that has the brilliant Super AMOLED Plus display in the world.

Debuting at IFA 2011 in Berline, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 will merge both design and ultimate portability, where the Super AMOLED Plus display paves the way for a wider range of colors with greater separation between lights and darks vividly. Not only that, a 7.7″ screen size is perfect, as it is not too big, and neither is it too small that you will need to squint. Add that to the fact that it comes in a 7.89mm thin form factor at a mere 335 grams, and chances are pretty high you have a winner on your hands (or in your jacket pocket/purse).

Want to remain connected? Not a problem, as the Galaxy Tab 7.7 will run on HSPA+ connectivity, while the processor that keeps everything in place would be a 1.4GHz dual core chip, while its rather massive 5,100 mAh battery is able to deliver around 10 hours of video playback time – sounds like it could seriously go up against the iPad 2 as the portable media player of choice for trans-Atlantic flights instead of relying on what the in-flight entertainment system offers.

As for the operating system of choice, you get the latest Android 3.2 Honeycomb version alongside Samsung’s very own TouchWiz UX for an added touch of personalization, which means you need not rock to Android’s default user interface which can be rather drab after a while. Other hardware specifications include a microSD memory card slot, Universal Remote Control functionality, a 3-megapixel camera with LED flash at the back, while on the front there is a 2-megapixel shooter. Are you stoked for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 already?

There will be no changes to the internals of the netbooks, but their exterior will be available in two new colors, Midnight Blue and Luxury Rose Gold, in addition to the Black version that is already available. The special edition laptops will also feature crystal accents on their bodies. Check them out in more detail in the following videos.

We don’t know anything about the pricing of those special editions, but knowing what the regular 9 series were going for it’s pretty safe to say that they won’t come cheap.
