Fake Chinese Apple Stores Become 'Smart Store'

In Kunming, the southwestern Chinese city where a treasure trove of fake Apple Stores was discovered last month, government officials forced 22 of these counterfeit retailers to stop using Apple trademarks. Authorities said all stores complied, but it appears some have kept the iconic Apple logo.

The original fake store, which was uncovered by an American blogger living in Kunming, has retained the glowing logo but changed its name from "Apple Store" to "Smart Store," M.I.C. Gadget reports. Another Chinese store not located in Kunming rebranded itself as "iParty."

According to a Friday post on the Kunming city government site, Apple's Shanghai office filed a complaint with the Kunming Trade and Industry Bureau on August 2. The stores had until August 10 to remove all Apple imagery, including signage and logos. While the Kunming government claimed each store had cooperated, it seems some stores are unafraid of Apple's lawyers.

The fake stores all reportedly mimic the look and feel of official Apple Stores, down to long wooden display tables, acrylic product information panels, and Apple posters plastered to the walls. Even the employees are glad in blue Apple t-shirts with white Apple name tags. Images posted on M.I.C. Gadget show that these details haven't changed.
