HTC Schedules 'Major Announcement' for Thursday

HTC Puccini tablet tease

HTC has announced a "major news announcement" for Thursday, although there's no telling what it is at this point.

Unlike Facebook or Apple, HTC clearly has not learned the lesson of placing a teasing graphic, catchy slogan, or even an outright tip in its invitation.

"HTC CEO Peter Chou will hold a live teleconference from Los Angeles on August 11, 2011 to make a major announcement," the note from HTC said. The announcement will take place at 8:30 AM PT, which PCMag.com will cover.

A question-and-answer session will follow the announcement, which is not apparently being made with any other company. Chou's call will originate from Los Angeles, however, which means that it could be entertainment-related.

Could this be the HTC Bliss, the rumored first Android phone for women? Probably not, PCMag.com mobile analyst Sascha Segan noted. "The Bliss is not a major announcement," he said via an email.

It might be the rumored Puccini tablet on AT&T, although a "major" announcement by HTC's chief executive would imply something more strategic. In recent days, HTC has purchased cloud services company Dashwire, which will be used to anchor HTC's own cloud services.

"Cloud services are key to delivering the promise of connected services to our customers," said Fred Liu, president of engineering and operations, HTC Corporation, in a statement at the time of the deal. "People want access to all of their important content wherever they are on any device. The addition of Dashwire's cutting-edge sync services and deep mobile cloud experience strengthens our ability to deliver these services in a more powerful way."

It's also possible, although probably unlikely, that HTC will announce a settlement with Apple, which it has engaged in patent litigation with.

"We have to sit down and figure it out," Winston Yung, chief financial officer of HTC, told Bloomberg on Tuesday. "We're open to having discussions."

In April, the International Trade Commission handed HTC and Nokia a victory in a key patent battle against Apple. But HTC took it one step further when, on July 6, it acquired S3 Graphics for $300 million in order to add it to its patent portfolio, according to reports. Within a week, however, Apple won a patent battle of its own when the ITC said HTC may have infringed on two Apple patents.
