Report: Google's Rubin Split Android Bonus With Team

That Andy Rubin: what a guy! Google reportedly cut its senior vice president of mobile a huge check when the first Android phone shipped back in 2008. But rather than take the multimillion dollar bonus for himself, Rubin allegedly split the cash among about 100 others on the Android team, the Wall Street Journal reports.

That resulted in paydays between $10,000 and $50,000 for Googlers across the team, the Journal said. Rubin's appreciation for these Googlers didn't stop there. The Android chief reportedly throws two parties a year for employees at his Mountain View home.

Google on Monday unexpectedly announced that it will acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion to "supercharge" the Android platform as well as beef up its catalog of patents. The Journal said Rubin was a "central player" in the deal, though Google hasn't commented on the specifics of how the deal was done.

In a statement discussing the acquisition, however, Rubin gave a glimpse into what the purchase means for the future of Android.

"We expect that this combination will enable us to break new ground for the Android ecosystem," he said. "However, our vision for Android is unchanged and Google remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform and a vibrant open source community. We will continue to work with all of our valued Android partners to develop and distribute innovative Android-powered devices."

But at least one person isn't too happy about the deal. A shareholder sued Motorola Mobility and its CEO Sanjay Jha over the price paid to the company.

Last year, PCMag mobile analyst Sascha Segan sat down with Rubin to discuss Android 3.0, carrier influence, and whether Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 is a threat.
