Infographic: How Travelers Use the Internet in the Air

In the past, travelers had limited options for occupying themselves while on a flight. They could watch a mediocre in-flight movie, read a book, do a crossword, or sleep. But now a growing number of airlines such as Delta, American, Jet Blue, and others have added Internet access on their planes. Gogo, one in-flight Wi-Fi provider, has released an infographic, first published on TechnoBuffalo, detailing how people are using the Internet in the air.

Apple's iOS is far and away the top mobile platform, accounting for 78 percent of Gogo users. Android is the second-place platform with 15 percent, followed by BlackBerry with 4 percent.

Gogo also ranked the top social networks people use. Not surprisingly, Facebook was the number one network people access in the air, followed by Twitter, LinkedIn, and Foursquare.

According to Gogo, most people are mixing business with pleasure when they log onto the World Wide Web from the air. Just 6 percent of people are using the Internet to work exclusively, as opposed to 27 percent who are getting online to play. However, 67 percent of travelers are logging onto the Internet to do a combination of the two.

Tablet usage in the sky is reflective of what the market looks like in general; only 3.2 percent of travelers are using Android-based tablets while 96.8 percent are iPad users. Similarly, 66 percent of people are accessing the Internet on their phones and 34 percent are using tablets. Most tablet owners don't travel with their device either. Gogo says 21 percent leave their laptop at home and bring their tablet when they fly, but 79 percent of tablet owners still bring their laptop along.
