Report: Apple Shipping First 27-Inch Thunderbolt Displays for Retail

Apple Thunderbolt

Apple has quietly started shipping the 27-inch Thunderbolt displays the company unveiled in July to its Apple Stores and third-party retailers, according to reports.

Customers who have pre-ordered the new displays online should receive them by mid-September, according to Electronista, while Mac Rumors reported this week that Apple Stores and other retailers should have the first Thunderbolt displays available "very soon."

Apple is pitching the display as "the ultimate docking station" for its laptops, but it's also compatible with the company's latest Mac mini and iMac desktops, which each have a Thunderbolt port.

The Thunderbolt display comes with a built-in Thunderbolt cable and port, and a built-in universal MagSafe cable that can be used to charge Apple's MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops. It's also got a second Thunderbolt port for daisy chaining, three USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, and a Gigabit Ethernet port, as well as a built-in FaceTime HD video camera and a 2.1 speaker system.

The display sports an edge-to-edge glass screen with 2,560-by-1,440 resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The whole rig, including the stand, measures 19.35 by 25.7 by 8.15 inches.

The big hook with Thunderbolt is that it delivers PCI Express directly to peripherals like external storage drives via bi-directional channels that boast transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps apiece. The Thunderbolt I/O technology, which folds DisplayPort and PCI Express data together to achieve such transfer rates, was developed by Intel in collaboration with Apple and is being billed as a better alternative to the USB 3.0 standard hardware currently starting to hit the market.

Thunderbolt was first introduced commercially in the MacBook Pro notebook lineup Apple released in February. Apple also has DisplayPort adapters for DVI, dual-link DVI, HDMI, and VGA output from the Thunderbolt port.
