Sony is pumping up the VAIO S-Series, rolling out the new 15-inch models and adding several new premium features to the laptop line, like a 1080p display, a built-in HD webcam, and the latest, second-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors available.
The new 15-inch VAIO S-Series models have also been slimmed down to less than 1-inch thick, with extended battery options providing all-day power on the road.
The new VAIO S-Series 15.5-inch models have been redesigned, with lightweight magnesium and aluminum construction cutting the weight down to 4.4 pounds. The widescreen display panel has been upgraded with a full 1080p high definition panel, which includes an anti-glare coating for improved outdoor visibility. For power on the go, the new model also has an optional extended sheet battery, which Sony claims extends the battery life up to 12 hours.
Internally, the Sony VAIO S-series got a full makeover, with new Intel Core i5 and i7 processors available. Select models are also equipped with solid-state drives (SSDs) for faster performance and speedier start times, with Quad RAID 0 configurations up to 1TB in capacity. The new VAIOs also offer high-end entertainment options, like optional Blu-ray drives, and WiDi 2.0, Intel's wireless streaming technology, which streams 1080p content from the laptop to any HDTV through a Netgear Push2TV adapter.
To take advantage of the new displays' full potential, the Sony VAIO S-Series also picked up the new AMD Radeon HD 6630 Hybrid graphics card, with 1GB of VRAM. A physical switch on the laptop allows users to alternate between the high-performance graphics of the AMD GPU or the more energy efficient integrated graphics of the Intel Core processor.
For the security-minded, there several security features available, including Trusted Platform Module and Symantic VIP Access technology. The 15-inch VAIO S-Series will also be available with several optional accessories, including a docking station, privacy filter, and the aforementioned sheet battery.
